Attention: Due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy the race has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 10th, 2013

Welcome to the Doughnuts For the Heart Challenge!

Originally we were scheduled for Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Wickham Park in Melbourne, Florida. As everyone is aware Hurricane Sandy was bearing down on the area Friday, October 26 and in an effort to make sure that the event was safe, we decided to postpone the run. Making a decision like this 48 hours prior was no easy task, and coordinating getting notice to everyone was a challenge, but we did it because we thought it the right thing to do. The new date for the next Doughnuts For The Heart Challenge is Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne, Florida.

If you have already registered for the October 28, 2012 event, you will be automatically registered for the February 10, 2013. If you would like a refund, please contact us via the contact page and we will gladly refund your payment.

NEW! - In addition, we have added male and female runner categories with five year breaks, which is more popular with the running community. There is also an addition of the Designated Doughnut Eater, so runners can have someone else present to eat their doughnuts.

The Doughnuts For The Heart Challenge is an annual race in Brevard County, Florida. The race is operated by the Freemasons of Brevard benefiting the Cardiac Research Institute (CRI) at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL), a not-for-profit institute (www.mmrl.edu). The race is scheduled for Sunday, February 10, 2013, starting at 7:30am, at the Wickham County Park Pavilion.

The Challenge begins at the Pavilion just north of the campgrounds; each runner will cover 2 miles through the park returning back to the Pavilion. The Challenger will then down a full dozen of the famous Krispy Kreme doughnuts; The Challenger must then run the 2 mile track again through the park back to the finish line at the Pavilion all in one hour.

We expect the DFTH Challenge to attract advanced runners who rarely eat one doughnut to the non-competitor out for a fun run on a Saturday morning to support a great charity like the CRI/MMRL. There will be many supporters just out for a walk. The Challenge includes and welcomes all physically challenged competitors to come out and enjoy the spirit of competition. Teams are encouraged, and this year we have added categories for our Law Enforcement and Fire Fighters.

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU DO THIS?

The Cardiac Research Institute (CRI) at the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL) is an internationally recognized biomedical research institute. For its size, there are few institutes worldwide whose innovative research is as productive and influential in the field of experimental cardiology. In recent years, the MMRL has become an international center for genetic screening of cardiac arrhythmia diseases, especially those contributing to sudden death syndromes, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The MMRL is blazing new trails in the development of safe and effective drugs for atrial fibrillation, addressing one of the greatest unmet medical needs facing our society. With its recent inauguration of a Stem Cell Center, the CRI/MMRL is making rapid progress in the creation of human models of disease focused on development of innovative therapies and cures.

On the other hand, doughnuts are found all over the world too and are considered international! That is why we feel they go together for a fun way to raise awareness and money for this worthy charity.

We want to help all mankind, and by helping the CRI/ MMRL you are helping too.

Thank you for your support.
